Remember that everybody responds to therapy differently. Your results could be better or worse than these. However; the more compliant you are with the therapy, the better your results will be.
In the following section, you will find letters from dentists and patients about their TLC experiences. You will also find exciting results from patients who have opted for TLC over periodontal flap surgery.
November 4, 2008
Dear Dr. Wilson
I feel like I'm doing an infomercial for your office. I just saw some results from a patient who was to have some molars removed a year ago. The molars are saved, and there is actual bone regeneration. I have been a dentist for twenty years and have never seen a vertical defect regenerate five millimeters of bone. That is amazing, I must say. I am very excited for that patient.
This afternoon, I was to have started some quadrant scaling for Cxxxxx Hxxxxxx. But she is scheduled for a consult tomorrow with you. Cxxxxx really wants to hang on to her teeth and is interested in what can be done. Because it appears that you may be able to do the q-scale in a cleaner, more efficient way, I have recommended that she have the work done at your office as soon as possible. I have enclosed a copy of her full mouth series. Please let me know if there is any other information necessary in her behalf.
Thanks for your help. I would be interested in any courses or events to learn more about what you are doing.
Sincerely,
Mxxxxx W. Rxxxx DMD
Fantastic Dentist... was the best and most diligent dentist I've ever been to. My wife was so impressed that she got me to switch dentists and now one of our grand daughters goes also. I would gladly recommend Dr. Wilson to anyone. Mxxx Bxxxx
CASE STUDY #1
A 38 year old female came to us for TLC therapy in December of 2007, because she was informed that she had severe gum disease that would require flap surgery to treat. She was also informed that she would have to have her front four upper teeth removed and replaced with implants.
She had a total of 28 teeth in her mouth, as she was missing her four wisdom teeth. We took 6 measurements around each tooth, so we measured 168 sites in her mouth (6 x 28 = 168). Of the 168 measurements, 48 were 1-3mm deep (which is good). However, 82 measurements were 4-5mm deep (which is bad) and 38 were 6mm and above (which is really bad). Her deepest measurement was 11mm, and 94 measurements were bleeding, which is also bad. Her front four upper teeth were loose, and they had large spaces (called diastemas) between them.
A couple of months after LANAP (no scalpels, no stitches), the diastemas were completely closed and her teeth were no longer loose!!! Her bleeding points had decreased from 94 down to 33. The number of shallow pockets (4-5mm) had decreased from 82 to 30. The number of deep pockets (6mm and above) had decreased from 38 to 2. Her deepest measurement was 7mm (her deepest previous measurement was 11mm).
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After just two months of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding sites | 94 | 33 |
| # of shallow pockets | 82 | 30 |
| # of deep pockets | 38 | 2 |
| Total # of pockets | 120 | 32 |
| #of loose teeth | 4 | 0 |
| Deepest pocket | 11mm | 7mm |
Needless to say, she was very pleased that she was able to keep her teeth and not have surgery. She has since moved to San Diego, but recently contacted us and told us that even though she now lives in San Diego, she will be back soon to have us evaluate her gums. The great thing about this therapy is that with the Perio Trays, her gums will continue to heal as the pockets continue to shrink and the bleeding subsides.
CASE STUDY #2
A 59 year old male patient came to us for a free consultation in June of 2008. He stated that he hadn't been in a dental office in over 10 years.
He had a total of 26 teeth in his mouth, and we measured 6 sites around each tooth. Of the 156 measurements that we recorded: 100 were bleeding; 3 exhibited pus (there could have been more, but with so much bleeding, it's possible we missed some pus); 38 were within normal limits (1-3mm); 81 were shallow pockets (4-5mm deep); 31 were deep pockets (6mm and above); and 5 teeth were loose. This is a classic case of moderate to severe periodontitis.
Two months later (after TLC - not flap surgery): The number of bleeding measurements had dropped from 100 to 45. The number of measurements exuding pus had decreased from 3 to 1. The number of shallow pockets had decreased from 81 to 51. The number of deep pockets had decreased from 31 to 7, and the 5 teeth that were previously loose are no longer loose.
This patient is due to have his measurements taken again, and as soon as he does, we will post the continued improvements.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After just two months of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding sites | 100 | 45 |
| # of sites with pus | 3 | 1 |
| # of shallow pockets | 81 | 51 |
| # of deep pockets | 31 | 7 |
| Total # of pockets | 112 | 58 |
| Deepest pocket | 8mm | 6mm |
| # of loose teeth | 5 | 0 |
CASE STUDY #3
A 66 year old female came in for a free consultation on 7-23-08. She told us that she hadn't been to see a dentist in over 4 years. She has 28 teeth, and we measured 6 sites around each tooth. Of the 168 measurements we took: 138 were bleeding; 61 were shallow pockets (4-5mm); 14 were deep pockets (6mm and above). She didn't have any loose teeth, but her deepest measurement was 10mm.
One week later, we began treating her with TLC (no scalpels and no stitches). We used a combination of perio trays and laser, and we re-measured her on 11-26-08. Her bleeding points had decreased from 138 to 7. Her shallow pockets had decreased from 61 to 13. Her deep pockets had decreased from 14 to 0, and her deepest measurement was now 5mm.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After just four months of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding sites | 138 | 7 |
| # of shallow pockets | 61 | 13 |
| # of deep pockets | 14 | 0 |
| Total # of pockets | 75 | 13 |
| Deepest pocket | 10mm | 5mm |
She has since referred her husband to our office, and we expect similarly impressive results from him.
CASE STUDY #4
On 2-3-09, a 65 year old female patient came to our office for her free consultation. She told us that she hadn't been to see a dentist in over a year. She said that the reason she hadn't been to the dentist in over a year was because she was informed that her gum disease required gum surgery to reduce the pockets. She preferred the idea of Perio Trays and laser periodontal therapy over scalpels and stitches.
She had a very severe case of periodontitis. We measured 6 sites around each of her 25 teeth. Of the 150 measurements we took: 124 were bleeding; 12 exuded pus; 51 were shallow pockets (4-5mm); 35 were deep pockets (6mm and above). Her deepest pocket was 11mm, and three pockets were deeper than 9mm.
On 8-5-09, she returned for a re-evaluation her gums. We didn't perform traditional gum surgery, we used perio trays and laser gum therapy (TLC 4 GUMS). She still has all 25 teeth, so we re-measured 150 sites. Of the 124 that were bleeding six months earlier, now only 22 are bleeding. Of the 12 that exuded pus, now there are none. Of the 51 shallow pockets, now there are only 23. Of the 35 deep pockets, now there are none. In fact, where her deepest pocket used to be 11mm, now her deepest pocket is only 5mm.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After just 6 months of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding sites | 124 | 22 |
| # of sites with pus | 12 | 0 |
| # of shallow pockets | 51 | 23 |
| # of deep pockets | 35 | 0 |
| # of pockets above 9mm | 3 | 0 |
| Total # of pockets | 86 | 23 |
| Deepest pocket | 11mm | 5mm |
Naturally, she's very pleased with the results, and as long as she continues to wear the trays, her gums will continue to heal. I tell my patients, "You didn't get this disease overnight, so don't expect it to go away overnight." Eventually, I expect her gums to be completely healthy.
CASE STUDY #5
This is an awesome case! On 5-30-06, a 55 year old female patient came in for a free consultation. She was very afraid of dentists. She had a total of 26 teeth in her mouth. She told us that for the past 20 years, she had been told about her gum disease. She said that every time she went to a periodontist, all they wanted to do was flap surgery. She kept refusing, because she was afraid of the scalpel and stitches. She said that they threatened her that if she didn't have flap surgery on her gums, she was going to have to have all of her teeth pulled. She repeatedly asked for an alternative treatment, but they only wanted to do flap surgery.
As she finally worked up the courage to come back in, we eventually measured 156 sites (6 x 26). Of the 156 measurements that we took: 104 were bleeding; 75 were shallow pockets (4-5mm deep); 56 were deep pockets (6mm and above). Her deepest pocket was 15mm deep, and 15 out of the 26 teeth were loose.
On 8-20-08, her periodontal status was re-evaluated. Of the 104 measurements that were previously bleeding, only 10 were now bleeding. Of the 75 previous shallow pockets, 12 measured 4-5mm. Of the 56 deep pockets, now only 1 measured 6mm. The 15mm pocket from two years earlier now measured 6mm, and instead of 15 loose teeth, she now had only 3 loose teeth.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After two full years of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding sites | 104 | 10 |
| # of shallow pockets | 75 | 12 |
| # of deep pockets | 56 | 1 |
| Total # of pockets | 131 | 13 |
| Deepest pocket | 15mm | 6mm |
| # of loose teeth | 15 | 3 |
She was so thrilled with the results, that she asked us to do a smile makeover on her. Now she says that she's constantly receiving compliments on what a beautiful smile she has. She is so grateful that we were able to save her teeth for her. I see no reason why she shouldn't be able to keep all of her teeth for the rest of her life.
She has since referred her husband to us, and we are taking excellent care of him as well. She says we have set a new standard of care in dentistry.
CASE STUDY #6
On 12-4-08, a 54 year old male came into the office for a free consultation. His wife had flap surgery in the past, and he said that he wanted to avoid having to go through what she went through. He had a total of 23 teeth in his mouth, and we measured six points around each tooth for a total of 138 measurements. Of the 138 measurements recorded, every single one bled profusely. 3 measurements exuded pus, but with so much bleeding, it's quite possible that there was more pus that simply wasn't detected. We measured 24 sites that were 4-5mm deep, and 100 that were 6mm and above. The deepest measurement we recorded that day was 12mm, but we also measured 22 "double-digit" pockets (deeper than 9mm).
We began TLC immediately, and brought him back for a periodontal maintenance appointment in March of '09. We re-measured, and now instead of 138 bleeding points, there were only 26. None of the measurements exuded pus. His shallow measurements had climbed from 24 to 65. This number is deceiving, because it appears to have gotten worse. However, the number of deep pockets had decreased from 100 to 11, and the number of double-digit pockets had decreased from 22 to 0.
From this information, we can determine that 48 measurements that used to be pockets are no longer pockets, and 89 measurements that used to be deep pockets are now shallow pockets.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After 3 months of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding Sites | 138 | 26 |
| # of sites with pus | 3 (+) | 0 |
| # of shallow pockets | 24 | 65 |
| # of deep pockets | 100 | 11 |
| Total # of pockets | 124 | 76 |
| # of pockets above 9mm | 22 | 0 |
| Deepest pocket | 12mm | 6mm |
This patient is very pleased with his progress, as are we. He went from generalized severe periodontitis to generalized early periodontitis in three short months without scalpels and stitches. He is scheduled to return for a periodontal maintenance appointment in October. At that appointment, we will re-measure and post his results. We will undoubtedly see continued improvement because he has done an excellent job wearing his Perio Trays as instructed. As long as he continues to wear his Perio Trays, his gums will continue to get healthier.
CASE STUDY 7
This 55 year old male patient presented to our office in January of 2007 for a free consultation. He hadn't been to see a dentist in over 10 years, and he was afraid of losing his teeth. He only had 19 teeth remaining, so we measured 114 sites (6 x 19). Of the 114 measurements we took, only two of them measured within normal limits (1 - 3mm). All 114 sites bled profusely. 47 measurements were 4 - 5mm deep, and 65 were 6mm and above. His diagnosis was generalized severe periodontitis.
He delayed treatment for 6 more months, so we began treatment in July of 2007. We performed LANAP in all four quadrants, and we had to extract two teeth. Once his gum disease was under control, we restored his remaining dentition with crowns, bridges, a veneer, a couple of fillings and a lower removable partial denture. We then made a set of Perio Trays for him. We re-measured his remaining 17 teeth on 2-11-09. Of the 114 sites that were bleeding two years earlier, now only 5 bleed. Of the 47 shallow pockets, he now has 10. And of the 65 deep pockets, he now has 1. While his deepest pocket used to be 18mm, his deepest pocket is now 6mm. He is scheduled to have two implants placed in his upper right quadrant, and we will place crowns on each of those implants.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After two full years of TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| Bleeding sites | 114 | 5 |
| # of shallow pockets | 47 | 10 |
| # of deep pockets | 65 | 1 |
| Total # of pockets | 112 | 11 |
| Deepest pocket | 18mm | 6mm |
Obviously this patient is thrilled with his results, and he feels that our therapy should be considered the new standard of care!
CASE STUDY 8
This is a 57 year-old female patient who presented on 2-21-08 for a free TLC consultation. She had been referred to a periodontist for surgical pocket reduction. She saw me on The Wellness Hour, and she "was very impressed" with what she had seen. She told us that she would like to have us treat her gums with a laser rather than to have a periodontist use a scalpel and stitches.
We charted her periodontal pocketing treated the left half of her mouth with LANAP on 4-3-09, and the right half on 4-25-09. At the start of treatment, she had 76 shallow pockets measuring 4-5mm, and she had 74 deep pockets measuring 6mm and above. Her deepest measurement was 11mm, and she had 6 "double-digit" pockets of 10 and 11mm.
On 2-10-09, we remeasured. She now has 38 shallow pockets and 1 deep pocket. She has no more "double-digit" pockets, and her deepest measurement is now 6mm.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After 10 months after TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| # of shallow pockets | 76 | 38 |
| # of deep pockets | 74 | 1 |
| Total # of pockets | 150 | 39 |
| Deepest pocket | 11mm | 6mm |
| # of pockets above 9mm | 6 | 0 |
We are currently maintaining her with 3-month periodontal maintenance appointments. She's very excited about the results and she's looking forward to starting the Perio Trays in January of 2010.
CASE STUDY 9
This was such an easy case. On 5-27-09, this 70 year old male patient came in for a free TLC consultation. He told us that his dental office had been "injecting something" into his gums in an attempt to shrink his pockets. According to the patient, he was told by his dental office that he would be referred to a periodontist for surgical pocket reduction if the injections didn't work for him. The patient felt like the injections weren't working, and he definitely didn't want to go to a periodontist.
We charted his periodontal condition, and he had generalized gingivitis and early periodontitis with some localized areas of moderate periodontitis. We told him that we could treat him without surgical pocket reduction.
He had 27 teeth in his mouth, and we measured 162 sites (27 x 6). Of the 162 measurements recorded, 50 were bleeding. He had 47 shallow pockets measuring 4-5mm, and 9 deep pockets measuring 6mm and above. His deepest pocket was 6mm.
We treated him 100% non-surgically, and the results were quite typical. 3 months later, the bleeding had decreased from 50 sites to 15 sites. The shallow pockets had decreased from 47 to 10, and the deep pockets had decreased from 9 to 1. His total pockets had decreased from 56 to 11. His deepest pocket is still 6mm.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After 3 months after TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| # of bleeding points | 50 | 15 |
| # of shallow pockets | 47 | 10 |
| # of deep pockets | 9 | 1 |
| Total # of pockets | 56 | 11 |
| Deepest pocket | 6mm | 6mm |
He's doing an excellent job of wearing his Perio Trays, and we fully expect his condition to improve. He's thrilled that he didn't have to go to the periodontist and that he didn't have to keep getting the injections in his gums!
CASE STUDY 10
This case is very similar to Case Study 9. This is a 53 year old woman who came to us on 2-10-09 for a free TLC consultation. She had been informed that she needed surgical pocket reduction. We charted her periodontal condition, and just like Case Study 9, she had generalized gingivitis and early periodontitis with some localized areas of moderate periodontitis.
She has a total of 28 teeth in her mouth, so we measured 168 sites (6 x 28). Of the 168 measurements we recorded, 41 were bleeding, 1 had pus, 45 were shallow pockets (4-5mm deep) and 2 were deep pockets (6mm and above). Once again, the deepest pocket measurement was 6mm.
We treated her 100% non-surgically, and once again obtained excellent results without using a scalpel or stitches. We re-measured her on 8-19-09, and found that her bleeding points had decreased from 41 to 5. She had no pus. Her 45 shallow pockets now number 3. Her deep pockets number 0, and her deepest measurement is now 4mm.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After 6 months after TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| # of bleeding points | 41 | 5 |
| # of points with pus | 1 | 0 |
| # of shallow pockets | 45 | 3 |
| # of deep pockets | 2 | 0 |
| Total # of pockets | 47 | 3 |
| Deepest pocket | 6mm | 6mm |
Of course she is very grateful for not having to go through surgery, as she was informed by her previous dental office. All she has to do now is wear her Perio Trays twice a day for 10 minutes and she should be able to easily keep her disease under control!
CASE STUDY 11
This is another slam dunk case. On 5-12-09, a male patient came in for a free consultation. He wouldn't give us his age, but I estimate it to be about 60-65. He told us that he typically has his teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis. However, when he went to the dentist a week before our consultation, they told him that he had too many 4mm pockets and they refused to clean his teeth for him.
He has a total of 27 teeth in his mouth, so we measured a total of 162 sites (6 x 27). Of those 162 measurements that we took, only 15 were bleeding. He had 42 shallow pockets (4-5mm), and no deep pockets. His deepest measurement was 5mm.
We treated this patient's gingivitis/early periodontitis with a thorough cleaning and a set of Perio Trays. He returned on 8-24-09 for a re-evaluation. He now has 5 bleeding points and 1 shallow pocket. His deepest measurement is 4mm.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After 3 months after TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| # of bleeding points | 15 | 3 |
| # of shallow pockets | 42 | 1 |
| Deepest pocket | 5mm | 4mm |
This is one of the easiest cases we have ever treated! It drives home the point that you don't have to let the disease get out of control before seeking treatment. It's so much easier to prevent this disease than it is to treat it when it's moderate or severe.
CASE STUDY 12
On 6-26-09, a 70 year old male patient came in for a free TLC consultation. His general dentist told him that he had advanced gum disease and he needed to go see a periodontist for flap surgery. He was told that he would need to have some teeth removed also. The patient saw my infomercial, and decided that he wanted to come and see me for a second opinion. He didn't like the idea of traditional flap surgery, and he especially didn't like the idea of losing any more teeth.
We charted his periodontal status. He had a total of 21 teeth remaining in his mouth, so we charted 126 measurements (6x21). Of the 126 measurements, 29 were bleeding, 5 exuded pus, 30 were shallow pockets (4-5mm) and 13 were deep pockets (6mm and above). His deepest measurement was 13mm, and he had 4 loose teeth.
We started TLC the following week. On 5-12-09, we re-measured. Of the previous 29 sites that were bleeding, now only 4 were bleeding. Of the 5 sites that had previously exuded pus, now none did. Of the 30 shallow pockets, now only 12 remained. Of the 13 deep pockets, now only 1 remained. His deepest measurement is now 6mm, whereas previously his deepest measurement was 13mm. He now only has 1 loose tooth, whereas previously he had 4.
Summary of Periodontal Issues Before and After 10.5 months following TLC:
| Periodontal Issue | Before | After |
| # of bleeding points | 29 | 4 |
| # of points with pus | 5 | 0 |
| # of shallow pockets | 30 | 12 |
| # of deep pockets | 13 | 1 |
| Total # of pockets | 43 | 13 |
| Deepest pocket | 13mm | 6mm |
| # of loose teeth | 4 | 1 |
He returned for another periodontal maintenance appointment on 8-18-09, and we took a radiograph (x-ray) of the single loose tooth. The radiograph shows over 75% of the bone loss from the 13mm defect has filled back in with new bone. He was so thrilled with the results, that he showed the radiograph to his general dentist. He said that the general dentist is amazed at the results. He didn't think that tooth could be saved, let alone that much bone regenerate.
Below are the radiographs that we took. The one on the left was taken on 2-10-09. The one on the right was taken on 8-18-9. We did not perform a bone graft... this is new bone generated by the body. It's called Osteogenesis!!
